There is something about being near the water that encourages us to slow down.
Perhaps it’s the way the waves move in their own quiet rhythm. Perhaps it’s the way the trees reflect across a still lake in the early morning light. Or perhaps it’s simply that, when we step away from the noise of everyday life, we finally have the chance to notice the little moments that are always happening around us.
This summer, our family spent time camping in the beautiful wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park. It was the kind of trip that fills your heart slowly—the kind where days are measured by canoe paddles dipping into the water, trails winding beneath towering trees, evenings gathered together, and the peaceful sounds of nature settling in around you.
One afternoon while we were canoeing, my youngest child looked over the side of the canoe at the water beneath us and said something that has stayed with me ever since.
He realized that although we would return to the same lake next year, it would never really be the same lake at all.
The water beneath our canoe in that exact moment would have long since flowed downstream. The sunlight would fall differently. The wind would move differently. We would be different too.
That exact moment would never happen again.
It was such a simple observation, but it felt like one of those rare little gifts of wisdom that arrives unexpectedly. A reminder that the moments we are living right now—the ordinary ones we might overlook—are quietly becoming memories as they happen.
A morning coffee beside the window.
A walk through the woods.
A conversation with someone we love.
A quiet evening spent stitching a few rows before bed.
These moments don’t always announce themselves as important while we’re living them. Often, we only realize their value when we look back and understand that they were little treasures all along.
The Quiet Beauty of a Stitch
I think this is one of the reasons I love cross stitch so much.
Each stitch is a tiny moment.
When we look at a finished piece, we see the beautiful image that has been created. We see the colours, the details, and the hours of work that have come together. But hidden inside that finished piece are hundreds—or thousands—of individual moments that can never be recreated in exactly the same way.
The stitch made while listening to the rain.
The stitch added during a quiet morning before the house wakes.
The stitch worked while remembering a conversation, a place, or a season of life.
Like the water beneath our canoe, each stitch is a moment we’ll never make exactly the same way again. The finished piece lasts, but it’s really the quiet moments spent creating it that become the treasure.
Perhaps that is why we return to our stitching again and again. It gives us a reason to slow down. It reminds us to be present. It allows us to create something beautiful while also collecting little pieces of our own story along the way.
Gentle Tides and Finding Where We Belong
This idea of slowing down and noticing the moments around us found its way into this month’s Stitch the Sea chapter.
In Starfish: Gentle Tides, Clara begins to discover that belonging is not always something we find all at once. Sometimes it grows slowly, through shared moments, familiar places, and the people who begin to feel like home.
I think life is often like that.
We spend so much time searching for the big moments—the milestones, the celebrations, the finished projects—that we sometimes forget the quiet moments are shaping us too.
The conversations.
The small acts of kindness.
The afternoons spent creating.
The ordinary days that slowly become the memories we treasure most.
Like the tide shaping the shoreline, those moments gently shape who we become.
A Little Invitation to Slow Down
This month’s Thyme for Stitching newsletter was created with that same feeling in mind. Inside, you’ll find the next chapter of Stitch the Sea, the Gentle Tides starfish pattern, a summer playlist filled with Celtic melodies and songs from the sea, reading suggestions inspired by themes of belonging and regrowth, and a refreshing iced tea recipe from our family kitchen.
Each month, I create the newsletter as a little invitation to pause—to settle into your favourite chair, pick up your stitching, and make a little space for yourself.
If you would like to receive future newsletters, including a free monthly pattern and cozy inspiration delivered right to your inbox, I would love to welcome you.
A Visit to Seabriar Cottage
For those who are looking for an even deeper creative experience, the doors to Seabriar Cottage are open.
Seabriar Cottage is my little corner of Patreon where stories, stitching, recipes, and seasonal surprises come together. It is a place designed to feel like a cozy seaside retreat—a place you can visit each month and discover something new waiting inside.
The first Seabriar Cottage stitch-along has already begun with The Harbour Kitchen Sampler, a project that combines stitching with seasonal recipes inspired by the cottage kitchen. Members also receive exclusive patterns, printable keepsakes, hidden surprises tucked into bottles, and new creative adventures throughout the year.
The best part? If you join now, you won’t miss what came before. New members have access to the growing collection of past content, so you can explore the cottage at your own pace.
Whether you simply enjoy the free newsletter, stitch along with Stitch the Sea, or choose to step through the garden gate into Seabriar Cottage, I hope you find a little place here where you can slow down, create, and enjoy the beauty of the moment you’re in.
Because the truth is, this moment—the one you’re living right now—will never happen again.
So perhaps we should treasure it while we’re here.
Happy stitching,
Jeannie
